Fighting to defend Black IPA

This is amongst the first ever blog posts to appear on this website, and for some, it may come across as old news, however; here at Buxton, we love Black IPA, and in our objective opinion, the style can perhaps be best described, as serious fun. After all, we brew two; a 5.5% version, and an Imperial, 7.5% example. Both are at least as interesting and diverse as their pale cousins would be. It’s a style
that provokes more comment, discussion, derision and excitement than any other that we brew.

Quite often, we hear, or read of Black IPA being described somewhat dismissively as a hoppy Porter, or rather prosaically as Cascadian Dark Ale, or even as a simple oxymoronic-absurdity. None of these do the style the justice it deserves, and certainly, Cascadian Dark Ale is a pretty ugly way of describing it.

For us, the bitter sweet flavour, the intensely hoppy aroma, the luxuriant mouth-feel, and the elegant appearance of the beer in a glass all add to the theatre and drama of an extremely enjoyable drink.

Hopefully, this article won’t be met with deafening silence, and long may the debate run on. Just be sure never to drink a Black IPA from a plastic glass ;-)
